Meme Lemming: 15 Books

  • Jun. 1st, 2009 at 11:48 AM
Bliss
Gakked from [info]afteriawake: Fifteen books you've read that will always stick with you. First fifteen you can recall in no more than fifteen minutes.

As I thought of them:

  1. The Bible -- I have several different translations/versions of the Bible and I'm not going to pick a specific one.

  2. The Black Stallion by Walter Farley

  3. The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

  4. The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien -- Yes. I consider them all one book.

  5. The Sackett Brand by Louis L'Amour -- I'm a huge L'Amour fan and I had a very hard time with this because I love a lot of his books, but I can't justify listing them separately. I could have listed Flint or the Kilkenny series... but The Sackett Brand is always one of the first of his books that comes to mind when I think of L'Amour.

  6. How Fletcher was Hatched by Wende and Harry Devlin. I still have my original copy and despite all the tape, it is falling apart.

  7. Stones from the River by Ursula Hegi

  8. Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking by Malcolm Gladwell -- What I love best about this book is that people often get upset if I list it as a favorite or as a book I find influential. Many actively try to discourage me from liking it. Controversy. It's a good thing.

  9. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L'Engle

  10. Whip Hand by Dick Francis -- as with L'Amour, I had a hard time picking one book, but Whip Hand was the first novel of his I ever read and even beyond enjoying the story, it impressed me with how powerful a tool first person POV can be.

  11. Animal Farm by George Orwell -- by far a more prophetic book than 1984

  12. Odyssey by Homer

  13. Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons -- I have problems with the storyline and underlying story of the book, but it sticks with me, if only because I love parts of it as much as I hate others.

  14. A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

  15. The Norton Anthology of Modern and Contemporary Poetry I actually have the old, single volume book edited by XJ Kennedy. I also have XJ Kennedy's Talking Like the Rain which is an anthology of poems for children. Both are amazing.

I have a facebook account which, oddly enough, is the only place I've ever had an online account using my actual name or posted a picture of myself. Anyhow, I was tagged to do this little quiz to see if I am really from Wisconsin. You can't take the test (as it's an annoying fb only thing) but I thought I'd share the results, 'cause I love the result.

Your Result: You must be from Wisconsin

Cheesecurd_profile

You may be pasty white, but you are smart, you cheer for the Green Bay Packers. You eat your bratwurst with beer or a large glass of milk. You don't feel cold until it is -20 degrees, and know the best game to hunt in Wisconsin isn't the deer but the mosquitoes.

Results of a very odd but amusing quiz:

I could survive for 1 minute, 3 seconds chained to a bunk bed with a velociraptor

Created by Bunk Beds.net

1 minute, 3 seconds, huh? I think that would be 1 minute, 2 seconds longer than I would want to stay alive while being eaten by a velociraptor. Just saying...

Meme Lemming: Crossover Mania

Brilliance
Before I start, I have to admit that I don’t usually play these meme’s because I don’t like the questions. You see, I’m not a shipper and any questions on who would date who or who’d sleep with who, just bore me. Second, I don’t like questions that ask me to kill off a character I love. So, in order to play (and have fun), I changed the ones I don’t like. The ones with *** are new. Feel free to play with the new questions, if you like. Just name your six favorite shows, then answer the questions. Don't choose shows based on the questions.

1) CSI:NY
2) Man From UNCLE (YAY for DVDs)
3) 24 (Back in two weeks!)
4) Bones
5) Criminal Minds
6) Eleventh Hour
(As you can see, Wednesday is my favorite.)

Meme Lemming: Christmas Meme

  • Dec. 26th, 2008 at 9:40 PM
Christmas Cow
1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? Wrapping Paper :)
2. Real tree or artificial? Real
3. When do you put up the tree? As soon as possible, but it’s usually two or three weeks before Christmas.
4. When do you take the tree down? Whenever I get around to it; I’m usually driven to take it down when the needles start all falling off.
5. Do you like eggnog? Nope. We drink homemade Irish Cream Whiskey instead…
6. Favorite gift received as a child? A present from my grandfather (my dad’s father) – the rack of the best 10-point buck he shot. Made only better with time, knowing what it meant for him to give me that prized possession. And yes, I wanted it at the time, too.
7. Hardest person to buy for? My dad.
8. Easiest person to buy for? My daughter.
9. Do you have a Nativity Scene? Two, in fact.
10. Mail or email Christmas cards? Neither, although I really would like to change that next year.
11. Worst Christmas gift you ever received? I can’t think of anything.
12. Favorite Christmas Movie? Muppet Christmas Carol.
13. When do you start shopping for Christmas? On and off throughout the year, but mostly the two weeks before Christmas.
14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? Yes.
15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? Christmas cookies!
16. Lights on the tree? Of course!
17. Favorite Christmas song? O Come, O Come, Emmanuel; O Little Town of Bethlehem; O Holy Night…
18. Travel at Christmas or stay home? Stay at home – but that’s where most of my family is.
19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeer's? Dasher, Dance, Prancer, Vixon, Comet, Cupid, Donder, Blitzen… Rudolph.
20. Angel on the tree top or a star? Angel
21. Open presents on Christmas Eve or morning? Well, here with Wil and Myr it’s Christmas morning… But we open some the weekend before to the weekend after… all depending upon when people can get together.
22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year? Not enough time to do everything.
23. Favorite ornament theme or color? I’m much to eclectic to have a theme other than “Christmas”.
24. Favourite for Christmas dinner? This is hard because we do “buffet-style” food for most of the gatherings, so we have a little of everything, and that’s what I like best.
25. What do you want for Christmas this year? Gift cards to B&N.
26. Who is most likely to respond to this? I hate pointless questions!
27. Do you go to a Christmas worship on the Eve, at Midnight, on the Day or not at all? Eve, lately the midnight service.
28. What's your favorite Christmas Memory? That’s a hard one… I’d have to say just being with family.
29. What kind of outside lights to you put up? I have two inflatable Pooh Bears.. but they didn’t get up this year.
30. Do you believe in Santa Claus? Yes.

Meme Lemming: 8 Facts

Here's the rules:
1. Each player starts with 8 random facts/habits about themselves.
2. People who are tagged, write a blog post about their own 8 random things, and post these rules.
3. At the end of your post you need to tag 8 people.

I once did a "100 things" to know about me meme (fifty here and fifty more here). These weren't on there.

1. I can 't do anything short. This is supposed to be "facts/habits" and most of them turned out to be bits of personally philosophy. This is often how things go with me.

2. I'm currently working on my old apple iBook )

I'm not going to tag anyone, because I don't do that. It's pushier than I like to be. (I suppose that could be a ninth random fact, but I'm not numbering it).

If you feel like doing it, post away. I'll read your responses.

Meme Lemming: 5 fandoms meme

Thought I'd do a meme because I should be sleeping but I have to wait for the laptop to finish installing XP....

Five Fandoms Meme
Choose five series (no peeking before you choose them), list them, and then answer the questions behind the cut.

1. Man from UNCLE
2. A-Team
3. 24
4. Bones
5. CSI:NY

The questions/answers )

This would be an easier meme if I would have chosen shows from the same era's. Granted 24, Bones and CSI:NY are all from "our time" but then 24's universe, what with nuclear detonations in California and active terrorist attacks in the US places it firmly in an alternate timeline.

Still fanfic allows for some extra suspension of disbelief and I've always wanted to do a 24/CSI:NY crossover.

Quiz Lemming: Dumb American

I am so smart! *S-M-R-T*

You Are a Smart American

You know a lot about US history, and you're opinions are probably well informed.

Congratulations on bucking stereotypes. Now go show some foreigners how smart Americans can be.

They were easy questions actually (especially since my daughter has just been studying this stuff the last few years). I'm not sure that 10 "Trivial Pursuit" questions qualify anyone as smart and I can guarantee knowing a lot about US history is not a gold star way to prove your intelligence to "foreigners".

I do, however, make sure that my opinions are well informed and equally well thought out.

Meme Lemming: Lyrics Meme

I've seen this meme floating about. I thought I'd play even though I don't think most of my songs would be recognizable. I was surprised, though. I had more "popular" songs show up on the list then I expected. I was also surprised that I didn't get repeats of artists -- I have entire CDs on here and expected to get some repeats. Even though this isn't the computer that has all my old-time country, I had been looking forward to having most of these songs be country songs that no one heard of. That didn't work out! *pout*

Rules:
Step 1: Put your MP3 player or whatever on random. iTunes on my iBook
Step 2: Post the first line(s) from the first 20 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing the song. (Skip the instrumentals, the remixes and the mashups) I could only use about every 5th song, because this machine is mostly soundtracks
My added Step: If the title of the song is in the first line, replace it with "insert title here".
Step 3: Let everyone you know guess what song and artist the lines come from.
Step 4: Strike out the songs when someone guesses correctly.

Click if you want to play )

I may do the "Movie Quote Meme" later, because more poeple could play that one.
